Discover the Wild Beauty of Botswana as a Family
A Safe, Immersive, and Fully Supported First Safari Experience
A family safari in Botswana is not about rushing from one lodge to the next; it’s about space, wildlife, and shared moments that feel real. This 5-day self-drive itinerary has been carefully designed for families traveling with children, balancing adventure, comfort, and professional support every step of the way.
Botswana is one of Africa’s safest and most conservation-focused safari destinations. When paired with the right route, the right vehicle, and family-friendly lodges, it becomes an ideal introduction to Africa for parents and children alike.
This is not a “do-it-yourself” gamble. It’s a professionally planned self-drive safari, giving your family independence on the road, while we handle logistics, accommodation standards, route safety, and park access behind the scenes.
Welcome to Your First Family Safari in Botswana
If this is your first time planning a safari, especially with kids, it’s normal to have questions:
- Are the roads safe for self-driving?
- Will the distances be manageable for children?
- What happens if we get stuck or need help?
That’s exactly why this itinerary exists.
This 5-day family self-drive safari focuses on short, manageable driving days, well-maintained routes, and lodges experienced in hosting families. You’ll explore iconic wildlife areas such as Chobe National Park and the Moremi ecosystem, without long, exhausting transfers or unnecessary risk. Every overnight stop includes full-board accommodation, meaning meals are taken care of, an important detail when traveling with children in remote areas.
Why Self-Drive Works So Well for Families in Botswana
Unlike many safari destinations, Botswana’s national parks are well-suited to guided self-drive travel when planned correctly. For families, this means:
- Stop when you want: bathroom breaks, snack stops, wildlife sightings
- Set your own pace: no pressure from group schedules
- Children engage more: reading maps, spotting animals, learning tracks
- Private family time: no shared vehicles with strangers
We pair this freedom with real support, including route briefings, emergency backup, and a fully equipped 4×4 suitable for Botswana’s terrain.
Who This Family Safari Is Designed For
This itinerary is ideal if you are:

✔ Traveling as a family (2 adults + 1–3 children)
✔ Interested in a self-drive safari, but not willing to compromise on safety
✔ Looking for short driving distances and comfortable lodges
✔ Wanting authentic wildlife experiences, not crowded mass tourism
✔ Seeking professional planning, local knowledge, and on-call support
It is not designed for rushed box-ticking or extreme off-road challenges. This is a family-appropriate adventure, where wildlife encounters feel natural and unforced.

Detailed itinerary: 5-Day Family Self-Drive Safari Botswana
DAY
1
Arrival in Maun & Guided Transfer into Moremi Game Reserve
Collect your fully insured, family-sized 4×4 (Toyota Fortuner or Hilux double-cab), fitted with child seats, recovery gear, satellite tracking, and an emergency medical kit. The drive to Moremi’s South Gate takes approximately two hours, transitioning from open savannah into seasonal floodplains where elephant, giraffe, and plains game are often seen even before entering the reserve.
After checking in near Third Bridge, enjoy a relaxed late-afternoon game drive as temperatures cool and wildlife becomes active. Expect elephant herds moving to water, hippos emerging from channels, and predators beginning their evening patrols. Dinner and overnight at a family-friendly lodge or tented camp.
DAY
2
Moremi Wildlife Drives & Okavango Delta Waterways
Mid-morning brings a gentle change of pace with a traditional mokoro excursion into the Okavango Delta’s papyrus-lined channels. Children are particularly captivated by the silent glide through the water, spotting kingfishers, jacanas, frogs, and reedbuck at close range while guides explain Delta ecology and seasonal flooding patterns.
After a shaded picnic lunch on a floodplain island, return to camp for rest or swimming. In the afternoon, join a guided game drive led by a local Moremi specialist, focusing on animal tracking, spoor identification, and predator behaviour, an engaging learning experience for both adults and children, and dinner under the stars.
DAY
3
Community Encounters & Khwai Concession Safari
Arrive at your lodge overlooking the Khwai floodplain and enjoy lunch before an afternoon guided game drive. The concession’s mixed habitats support excellent predator viewing, with frequent sightings of leopard, lion, and African wild dog in a quieter, less commercialised setting.
Evening is spent around the campfire, sharing stories beneath some of Botswana’s darkest night skies, ideal for stargazing.
DAY
4
Chobe National Park – River & Land Safari Experience
After checking into a riverfront lodge, board a private Chobe River cruise timed for the late-afternoon light. This stretch of river hosts one of Africa’s largest elephant concentrations, alongside hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. The water-based perspective offers safe, close-range wildlife viewing ideal for families.
Return to the lodge for dinner, with the option of an evening night drive (where available) to search for nocturnal species such as civets, genets, and bushbabies.
DAY
5
Return to Maun or Extend to Victoria Falls
Alternatively, continue your adventure with a cross-border extension to Victoria Falls, just one hour away. All vehicle permits, insurance, and border documentation are arranged in advance, with typical fees of €38–40 per vehicle per country.
Drop off your vehicle in Maun or continue onward with optional scenic flights over the Delta or further self-drive exploration into Namibia’s Caprivi Strip.
